Job Title: Pharmacy Technician On Call

Department: Pharmacy

Reports To: Pharmacy Technician On Call Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Function: Non-clinical

Classification: On Call

Schedule: Fill in as-needed (8-hour shift between Monday-Friday 8:00am to 6:30pm)

Location: Rincon and Santa Ysabel sites

SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Pharmacist, performs assigned duties in support of the Pharmacy Department with an emphasis on accuracy, timeliness, and patient safety. Provides extraordinary care to patients and staff through friendly, caring, courteous, and professional services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Report to work on time and as scheduled.
Assist with preparation, labeling and dispensing of medications and supplies in accordance with physicians’

prescriptions to patients

Manages medication inventory, including ordering, stocking/organizing to prevent medication errors, rotating stock to minimize expired products, proactively responding to drug shortages, maintaining appropriate stock levels of formulary medications, using drop ship and alternative suppliers appropriately, and oversee the disposition of expired products.
Participates in counting and tabulating stock during annual inventory exercise.
Records refrigerator temperatures daily, ensuring that medications are stored at appropriate temperatures. Maintain refrigerator temperature logs per pharmacy policy.
Processes records of medications and supplies dispensed to patients, computes applicable charges, submits insurance claims, and enters data in pharmacy computer program.
Obtains and updates Medi-Cal, Medicare, and other insurance claims data regularly.
Calculates correct dosages, converting between metric and apothecary equivalents.
Organizes and maintains pharmacy files, ensuring they remain updated and are easily accessible. Prepares and files daily records containing information on prescriptions prepared.
Prepares, maintains, and posts current information on prescriptions filled to patients’ medication profile records.
Rings up sales for prescription pick up, collects payment, and gives appropriate change. Responsible for counting the contents of cash register drawer at the end of each shift, maintaining receipts, records and withdrawals.
Collects and accounts for reimbursement checks and cash received for pharmacy charges.
Prepares bank deposits of funds received.
Prepares correspondence as needed.
Maintains cleanliness of department’s counters, shelves, and equipment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.
Helps health care providers and patients by greeting them in person and by phone, answering questions and requests; referring inquiries to the pharmacist
Communicates effectively with nursing, physicians, and ancillary services to meet the needs of these departments and maintain a positive working relationship and image of the pharmacy department.
Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement

objectives, and safety, environmental and/or infection control standards.

Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. Rotates to cover the front desk as necessary
Works effectively independently and with other team members.
Attends required meetings and participates in committees as required.
Participates in staff development and educational activities.
Maintains patient confidentiality. Shall attend and participate in HIPAA training in the policies and procedures for guaranteeing the privacy of protected health information (PHI) conducted by the clinic administration. Shall also be trained in areas of privacy protection that are specific to the pharmacy environment, facility, and practice.
Rotates to our satellite facility in Santa Ysabel as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

TRAVEL & DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

Travel and driving are not required for this position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
Graduate of a vocational training school for Pharmacy Technician or equivalent.
Two years related experience preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGULATIONS

Current, valid license as a Pharmacy Technician from the California State Board of Pharmacy.
A valid CA driver’s license and good driving record is a required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
Current CPR certification or attain within 6 months of hire.
Applicants must successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam, tuberculin skin test or x-ray and urine drug screen test to include marijuana. Health must be adequate to perform all duties of the position.
Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and pro
Must pass a criminal background check.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of pharmaceutical and related medical terminology.
Knowledge of metric and apothecary systems of weights and measurements.
Knowledge of medical safety standards to assist in the preparation of pharmaceutical substances.
Knowledge of prescription drugs and the dispensing function necessary to check for and assure correctness.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, clinic staff, and the public.
Ability to perform mathematical computations and use a calculator.

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS

Must be proficient in the following:
Pharmacy software; Pioneer Rx preferred.
Productivity Software: Microsoft Office 365; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Email & Calendar Management (outlook), Teams (video conferencing and meetings), and Share Point.
Utilization of Paycom, Relias Learning, and PolicyTech systems.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents. Possess adequate written and oral language skills to communicate clearly and effectively.

Ability to respond appropriately to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.

Ability to create and deliver effective presentations to public groups, peer groups and/or leadership.

MATHEMATIC SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Ability calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages and volume.

Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.

Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

Ability to apply critical thinking skills to problem solve.
