Position Title:Alcohol and Substance Use Intervention Specialist

Total Vacancies: 4

Location:This position is considered District-Wide (contingent upon department and student needs)

Work Year:Classified Specialty Fields (205 paid days)

Hours/Days:8 hours per day | Monday - Friday

Work Schedule:To be determined

Salary:$31.79 - $38.59 per hour(Range 40, Classified Salary Schedule)

ALCOHOL AND SUBSTANCE USE INTERVENTION SPECIALIST

 

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Coordinator, Behavioral and Mental Health, the Alcohol and Substance Use Intervention Specialist would provide alcohol, tobacco and substance related prevention, intervention and treatment services to identified students.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Typical responsibilities and duties of the Alcohol and Substance Use Intervention Specialist position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Be familiar with and able to provide services in all alcohol, tobacco, substance use prevention and treatment programsincluding, education, prevention and treatment modalities;
  • Assist with planning, organizing, and implementing new programs and/or services under direct supervision of the Coordinator of Mental and Behavioral Health;
  • Provide professional development relative to the nature of alcohol, tobacco and/or substance use problems, i.e., prevention, treatment and referrals to services;
  • Organize and support campus wide events to promote awareness, wellness and prevention efforts, such as but not limited to, Red Ribbon Week, Wellness Week, Suicide Prevention Week and May is Mental Health Month;
  • Provide case management to students who are voluntarily and involuntarily engaged in prevention or intervention services;
  • Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions including didactic, process, relapse prevention, recovery servicesfor students and family members impacted;
  • Determine the need for and facilitate student referral to outpatient programs and/or services;
  • Support Site Administration, School Counselors, Mental Health Professionals, Positive Behavior Support Staff,Parent Liaisons, and other relevant staff in the implementation of programs to support the prevention of use and/or recovery of identified students;
  • Develop confidential treatment plans in collaboration with students and their families;
  • Perform intake duties, including screening for level of use and assigning the appropriate level of treatment, includingreferrals to outpatient clinics;
  • Provide timely and accurate documentation of all treatment notes, treatment plans, and screenings in the student health record, as well as maintain documentation in the student database;
  • Provide coordinated care to students and families including communication with professionals involved in the treatmentof the student, case management, obtaining release of information and keeping records related to the whole treatment of the student;
  • Assist with providing crisis intervention, risk assessments, and prevention services as assigned;
  • Create or assist with the preparation of administrative reports concerning caseload, program statistics, treatmentsuccess, District trends related to alcohol, tobacco and substance use and sales or other related reports;
  • Attend training sessions, staff development, and other in-service training as directed by administration;
  • Perform other related duties as may be required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Electronic health record systems;
  • Drug and alcohol testing to monitor treatment plans and medical instructions;
  • Knowledge of the 12 core functions of the Alcohol Drug Counselor, per CCAPP Credentialing program;
  • Understanding of the addictive process, including specific proficiencies, skills, levels of involvement with clients and scope of practice with substance use counseling and the understanding of the four competencies:
  • Understanding addiction
  • Treatment knowledge
  • Application of practice
  • Professional readiness

ABILITY TO

  • Apply the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services' (SAMHSA) best practice indicators;
  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Demonstrate an empathetic manner to support clients who may have multiple problems;
  • Make decisions and quick judgments concerning patient care to include benefits and treatment for their clients;
  • Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills and a compassionate nature;
  • Engage in active listening by giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times;
  • Maintain careful records and accurate reports of progress, history, service provided, and other relevant information pertinent in their client's recovery process;
  • Access and use District-adopted web-based systems.

EDUCATION

Associate degree in Behavioral Science or Allied Mental Health Profession or a Bachelor's degree in Behavioral Science or Allied Mental Health Profession or 315 hours of required Substance Use Disorder (SUD) education.

 

EXPERIENCE

  • One year of experience in counseling/advising/treating individuals with history/use of alcohol or substance use disorders;
  • Experience with co-occurring health and mental health disorders;
  • Free of any non-medical drug usage for a minimum of 3 years.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES

  • Must be registered as an RADT, CADC-1, CADC-11, CADC-111, or LAADC;

Environment

  • Office environment at the District Office and other locations determined by your supervisor;

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer;
  • Occasional bending at the waist and stooping;

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office equipment;
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone;
  • Occasional reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally;
  • Visual acuity to read, prepare/process documents and small figures;
  • Sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time;
  • Mobility.

Working Conditions

  • Extended viewing of computer monitor and audio/visual equipment;
  • Working with and around office equipment having moving parts.
