General Summary: Responsible for performing a variety of duties within a neurosurgery specialty office. Will be required to be involved in the clinical and administrative areas including assisting physicians with patient care and handling clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. Work together with Lead Medical Assistant to ensure clinic and tasks are completed efficiently. Provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the clinical services.
Overtime Status: Non-Exempt position

Essential Job Responsibilities:
Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned that may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking transfers, dressing changes, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.; collecting patient history; performing screenings per provider guidelines; assisting physicians/PA with various procedures; charting; and providing pertinent information. Assisting the physicians in appropriately managing/refilling post op pain medication.
2. Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned that may include sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/X-ray reports, hospital notes, submitting precertification’s for radiology exam and routinely checking status, etc.; completing forms/requisitions as needed; scheduling appointments; managing and updating charts to ensure that medical health information is complete and filed appropriately.
3. Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocols; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; monthly cold sterilization according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; and restocking exam/procedure rooms.
4. Fulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned including respecting/promoting patient rights; responding appropriately to emergency situations; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisor.
5. Triaging post op patients and relaying instructions to patients/families
6. Fulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities that vary according to state law, which may include medical/surgical asepsis, sterilization, instrument wrapping and autoclaving; checking vital signs or mensuration; physical examination preparations; clinical pharmacology; drug administration through prescription verifications with physician’s orders; minor surgery assists including surgical tray set-up pre/post-surgical care, applying dressings, and suture/staple removal; biohazard waste disposal and monitoring; therapeutic modalities; instructing patients with assistive devices, body mechanics, and home care; laboratory procedures including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines; quality control methods; specimen handling such as wound cultures or CSF cultures, emergency triage, and first aid.
7. Assist patients with checkout process, efficiently provide necessary orders and referrals as recommended by physician
8. Answer and screens telephone calls in a courteous manner, and record messages for physician and other personnel.
9. Schedule patient appointments and procedures according to established policies and procedures.
10. Obtain accurate information from patients and ensure all registration forms are complete at checkout.
11. Data Entry of completed (ROS) Review of System forms and NP packet overflow
12. Submit physician voice recording daily to transcriptionist securely.
13. Submit any urgent or STAT PPO precertification requests. Assist patient in scheduling appt for study if necessary.
14. Transcribe letters and create forms as needed.
15. Submit Office Visit encounters to billing office. Verify data entry for accuracy of ICD-10 and CPT coding prior to submitting billing.
16. Maintain files and records in a confidential manner.
17.Perform other related duties as directed or assigned.
Education: High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED)
Medical assistant diploma from an accredited vocational institution, or a community college course in medical assisting.
Requirements: Experience: Minimum one year of recent experience working in a medical facility as a medical assistant
Must possess a current CPR certification and current health records with the appropriate immunizations to work in the health care field (COVID-19, hepatitis B and tuberculosis).
Preferred: Current documentation of a national certification for the registered medical assistant (NCCT) or for the certified assistant through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

Work Environment: Combination of medical office and exam/procedure room settings. Well-lighted, well-ventilated, adequate space.
Mental/Physical Requirements: Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when making necessary patient transfers and helping patients with walking, etc. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds of supplies. Occasional stress from dealing with staff and patients.
