Full Job Description
Overview:
Assists Clinical Laboratory Scientists in the processing of specimens for testing. Assists pathologist and pathology staff. Primary duties are computer entry, specimen processing, clerical, answering phones and phlebotomy
support. Must maintain working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures.
Responsibilities:
Essential Job Functions
A. Consistently applies infection control policies/practices.
1. Understands and practices standard precautions for self and others in patient care activities.
2. Understands and practices appropriate disease-specific isolation.
3. Appropriately handles and disposes of sharps (i.e., needles, etc.) as required.
4. Ensures sterility of supplies and equipment.
B. Meets population/age specific competencies per unit specific addendum.
1. Takes the age of the patient into consideration when this affects procedures or normal ranges.
2. Processes neonatal samples appropriately
C. Attends department specific education/training, inservices, and staff meetings.
1. Attends mandatory in-services/educational/training activities.
2. Verifies, by signature/initials, attendance at staff meetings or reading of staff meeting minutes.
3. Submits all required CEUs and paperwork by deadline.
D. Department specific performance improvement project.
1. Actively assists in unit performance improvement monitoring.
2. Knows and understands PDSA model for unit’s Performance Improvement Program.
3. Demonstrates understanding of performance improvement principles in job performance.
E. Uses computer systems effectively and accurately
F. Performs specimen processing functions according to established guidelines. Accurately and promptly provides test reports.
1. Maintains quality of specimen identification by meticulous attention to details, especially name, date of birth and medical record number.
2. Accurately accessions test orders and ensure proper documentation of test orders (correct requisition, copies of physician orders with fluid, add-on and miscellaneous test documentation, copies of electronic orders).
3. Responds to the different specimen priorities (i.e. STAT, Code S- Stroke). Announces STAT and STROKE tests to Clinical Lab Scientists.
4. Follows proper telephone etiquette (i.e. answers phone before the third ring and states name during greeting, announces the caller to the new person and explain the reason prior to transferring calls).
5. Demonstrates knowledge of laboratory computer systems and hospital computer systems.
6. Accurately and promptly files all documentation and reports, including delivery of reports if needed, and faxing results.
G. Accurately performs various laboratory functions within scope of regulations
1. Takes temperatures accurately with proper documentation.
2. Prepares samples and documentation for reference lab testing.
3. Performs miscellaneous tasks appropriate to the lab section.
4. Demonstrates flexibility with scheduling.
5. Ensures that orders have been processed and collected by reviewing reports (i.e. pending logs, collection reports).
6. Exhibits follow-through by communicating with appropriate staff, physicians and co-workers to ensure problem resolution (i.e. hand-off communication).
H. Maintains supplies by watching inventory, restocking and ordering.
1. Takes inventory of miscellaneous and send-out supplies.
2. Restocks work areas with miscellaneous supplies used in sample testing.
3. Stores specimens appropriately.
4. Assures that there are no outdated materials or supplies
I. Obtains blood specimens according to established guidelines.
1. Follows patient identification guidelines and does not draw blood unless patient is properly identified.
2. Takes the age of the patient into consideration and properly positions arm or heel.
3. Follows proper blood withdrawal procedure and draws correct tubes in correct order.
4. Labels specimens appropriately with date, time and employee number at the bedside.
5. Willingly assists staff phlebotomists when necessary.
6. Willingly assists patient care areas with hard draws.
J. Service Excellence
1. Smiles with each patient interaction. Utilizes AIDET with every communication
2. Provides necessary patient assistance
3. Give excellent communication to patients and to other staff.
K. Ability to perform additional functions when assigned in the Emergency Department
1. Answers the telephone by the third ring using name, department and salutation.
2. Able to submit & create correct orders in CPSI/Evident HIS. Updates tracker as needed.
3. Assists with transports of patients to the floors, as able.
4. Responsible for daily assignments in the Emergency Department including but not limited to:
a. Cleaning & stocking the department
b. Completing logs and reports
c. Ordering supplies and equipment
5. Performs point-of-care urine pregnancy
L. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education/Training/Experience
Phlebotomy training course & certification
Preferred one year experience in acute patient care and phlebotomy
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
California certification: Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) I or Certified Phlebotomy Technician II.
