Residential Treatment Center is seeking full time counselors.

JOB SUMMARY

The Counselor has primary responsibility for his/her caseload. In conjunction with appropriate specialized staff, he/she develops a treatment plan focused on recovery from substance abuse as well as other issues that could be a barrier to clients leading a clean and sober life (i.e. life skills, health/mental health problems, educational/vocational challenges, etc.). In order to develop a well rounded plan the Counselor will utilize the program support staff. The goal of the Counselor is to facilitate client's treatment issues and progress while guiding them through each phase of treatment.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Drug and Alcohol or related certification.
  • CATC1 or equilavent
  • Knowledge of group process, group facilitation, and conflict resolution.
  • Strong reading comprehension with the ability to analyze complex information. Good written communication skills with proper grammar, good spelling, and legible handwriting.
  • A clear understanding of and the ability to demonstrate professional ethics, boundaries, and judgment.
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Time management skills.
  • Ability to handle a diverse population.
  • Knowledge of addiction and the addictive process.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED

  • Higher education in Psychology, Sociology, Counseling, or related field.
  • Knowledge of the stages of HIV, risk reduction techniques, and how HIV is transmitted.
  • Specialized knowledge such as, mental health issues, life skills, vocational training, anger management, incest, criminal behavior, rape crisis, grief, etc.
  • Knowledge of the TC milieu, 12 step philosophy, or other approaches to recovery.
  • A second language (particularly Spanish)
  • Computer literacy

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Treatment Planning: In a case conference setting evaluates each client's needs and based upon this evaluation develops a treatment plan coordinating with Community Services and Ed/Voc/Housing and mental health counseling staff. Continues working with appropriate specialists to update the treatment plan and ultimately determine client’s readiness to move to the next phase of treatment.
  • Caseload Responsibilities: Holds regular individual and group counseling sessions with all clients in caseload. Assists these clients in taking responsibility for their own actions by giving “learning experiences”, verbal reprimands, enforced reflection times, and facilitating “confrontations” in an appropriate and positive manner.
  • Administration and Compliance: In accordance with guidelines established by Healthcare Services to satisfy internal and external administrative demands, and those of evaluating agencies. Maintains up to date, accurate paperwork on all clients, and as required.
  • Community Responsibilities: Facilitates house meetings and specialized groups, teaches classes, plans clinical days and holidays. Checks the facility, takes responsibility for all clients as situations come up or as needed and communicates with clients’ primary counselors verbally and through the staff log when appropriate. Handles client urinalyses, body searches, and room searches.
  • Role Model: Acts as a role model by following house norms, demonstrating honesty and a willingness to listen to clients’ issues, and taking responsibility for his/her own actions.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs first aid and CPR as required.
  • Covers caseload of absent colleagues when necessary.
  • Serves on committees as assigned.
  • Works rotating schedule as needed.
