Lead Lab Technician - Phlebotomy Technician

POSITION SUMMARY

Assists the Clinical laboratory Scientist in the performance of technical and clerical functions under the supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Using standard techniques, collects, processes, and distributes blood specimens for testing. Performs a variety of routine laboratory procedures and clerical duties, including but not limited to ordering and inventory management of supplies for phlebotomy and laboratory office. Trains new employees. Responsible for the Lab Tech schedule.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides accurate and timely test results by performing assigned tasks in accordance with established procedures and policies.

  • Ensure professional development by assuming responsibility and accountability for current competency files.
  • Performs other job-related duties by accepting delegated assignments.
  • Documents training for all lab techs validating that they have the skills required for proper specimen collection, including patient preparation, if applicable labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation and storage of specimens and an awareness of the factors that influence test results.
  • Participates in the departmental and inter-departmental Quality Improvement Program through orientation, education, and quality planning activities.
  • Orders all phlebotomy and office supplies and distributes supply to departments and organize stock.
  • Meets CLIA requirements for Moderate Complex Testing.
  • Cooperates with other lab personnel and hospital staff personnel for efficient specimen reporting of lab results.
  • Loads samples on analytical analyzers where legally designated and/or permitted: culture specimens in microbiology as permitted.
  • Trains and educates lab techs regarding Turn Around Time (TAT), new lab policies, and procedures.
  • Assigns morning rounds ensuring that all Timed. STAT, and urgent draws meeting policy requirements.
  • Assists with MIDAS reporting.
  • Requests CDM for new tests performed in the lab.
  • Ensures lab tech coverage for meals and breaks. Arranges lab tech coverages for unscheduled absences.
  • Fills in a Pathology Tech and Front Office Tech when necessary.
  • Completes competency performance reports on all lab techs annually.
  • Resolves questions and errors in patient test orders and result reports.
  • Resolves any supply issues i.e., manufacturer supply shortage or back orders.
  • Provides feedback to the Lab Director necessary for the lab performance improvement.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education
Minimum (Required)
High School diploma or equivalent

Preferred (Not required)
Associate degree in biological sciences, chemistry or equivalent preferred.

Work Experience
Minimum (Required)
  • Aptitude for completing detailed technical procedures with high degree of accuracy.
  • Must possess effective communication skills.
  • Can multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to maintain a positive approach to problem solving and demonstrate flexibility in meeting new challenges.

Preferred (Not required)
Three years’ experience working in a clinical laboratory or anatomic pathology preferred.

Licenses and Certifications
Minimum (Required)
  • CPTI or CPT II-California Phlebotomy Certificate
  • Must successfully complete and maintain BLS Certificate from American heart Association.

Pay Transparency

The hourly rate range for this position is $19.65- $27.76.
