Description:
The Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for tasks that ensure smooth patient access and flow.
Under the direction of the RN Center Manager, performs a variety of clerical duties and front office operations in support of the patient care activities of the department. Ensures patient flow on clinic days with continuous communication. Is proficient in Affinity and SCM information systems. Has the ability to schedule appointments for multiple physicians.
The Medical Assistant performs primarily front office duties:
recording patient information such as vital signs, weight and changes in medical history, preparing items necessary for the visit like consents and special equipment, and assisting the provider during the examinations.
Cleans and prepares exam rooms and sterilizes instruments per protocol, prepares and administers medications for patients as directed by the physician and completes prescription refills.
Follows standardized procedures for back office duties.
Keeps the office running smoothly by answering phones, greeting patients, updating medical charts and records, handles pre-authorization process, matches patients’ insurance information with correct provider for the services needed, and orders laboratory services.
Greets and assists patients, answers phones, schedules appointments, and escorts patients to room.
Collects and records patient vital signs (BP, TPR, height and weight), and promptly reports and unusual observations or changes in patient condition.
Assists physician with examination and procedures within the scope of their job
Provides patients with information as directed
Cleans exam room and instruments and maintains and organizes supplies
The Medical Assistant provides updates to the staff and patients on timing and status or all the above tasks and ensures even patient flow and continuous communication within Hoag and referring physician offices.
Protects patient confidentiality and follows procedures for handling confidential information.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Minimum one (1) year clerical experience, including filing, use of calculator and basic telephone skills.
Preferred:
Working Knowledge of EPIC or other Electronic Medical Record system ‘EMR’
Qualified bilingual or multilingual candidates
Medical Assistant Cert or Diploma
BLS-AHA certification
Basic keyboarding skills at 35 WPM.
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word and Excel.
