DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing routine medical laboratory tests for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. Responsible for the daily operation of the laboratory.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform technical laboratory functions including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis and immunology.
  • Reports tests results following hospital protocols, alerting providers and/or nurses about abnormal results.
  • Ensure quality control in collecting specimens, ensuring appropriate sampling and maintaining accurate record keeping.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and adequate supplies. Set up, maintain, calibrate, clean and test sterility of medical laboratory equipment. Keep area stocked at all times. Report equipment malfunctions to the Laboratory Manager.
  • Perform equipment maintenance activities including routine checks of instruments such as balances, refrigerators, and incubators.
  • Comply with all laboratory policies and OSHA regulations related to safety, cleanliness and infection control.
  • Perform related administrative duties including completing necessary forms, labeling samples and sample envelopes and maintain procedure logs.
  • Retrieve laboratory orders from, and input related data into, the electronic medical record.
  • Adhere to laboratory’s quality control policies and document all quality control activities.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: The following represent the minimum education, licensure, knowledge, experience, skills and abilities for the Medical Laboratory Technician position:

Education and Licensing:

  • Associate's Degree
  • Graduate of accredited Laboratory Technician program required
  • Current California State License as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)
  • Current BLS certification and maintain current

Knowledge and Experience: The following combinations or knowledge and experience are required and/or desired:

  • Minimum one (1) year of previous Medical Laboratory Technician experience preferred.

Skills and Abilities: Knowledge and interpersonal skills necessary to tactfully, kindly interact with diverse health professionals, physicians and patients/clients to include:

  • Knowledge of medical laboratory principles, standards, applications and tests.
  • Knowledge of medical laboratory safety, cleanliness and infection control policies and regulations.
  • Knowledge of medical laboratory equipment uses and maintenance.
  • Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to proficiently use a computer and electronic medical record.
  • Ability to maintain patient, team member and employer confidentiality. Comply with all HIPAA regulations.
  • Customer service oriented and ability to be friendly, cheerful and helpful to patients and others. Ability to meet patients and others needs while following hospital policies and procedures.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to pay attention to the minute details of a project or task.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt easily to changing conditions and work responsibilities.
  • Ability to display a positive attitude and be a positive agent for change.
  • Ability to work as a part of a team and collaborate with co-workers.
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks under stressful situations.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, this position is frequently required to do the following-

  • Use standard office equipment and access, input, and retrieve information from a computer.
  • Use computer keyboard with manual and finger dexterity and wrist-finger speed sufficient to perform repetitive actions efficiently for extended periods of time.
  • Communicate effectively in person or via telephone in a manner which can be understood by those with whom the person is speaking, including a diverse population.
  • Give and follow verbal and written instructions with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Vision: see details of objects at close range.
  • Coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Reach forward, up, down, and to the side.
  • Frequent standing, walking, grasping, carrying, and speaking.
  • Occasional sitting, reaching, bending and stooping.
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling up to 50bs, with assistance if needed.
  • Frequent use of computer, keyboard, copy and fax machines and phone.

Work Environment

  • Environmentally controlled hospital and laboratory environment.
  • Exposure to bodily fluids.
  • May wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves or a mask.
  • Possible exposure to bodily fluids, infectious specimens, communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common in a hospital environment.
  • Frequent interaction with a diverse population including team members, providers and patients.

Pay: $31.10 - $38.67 per hour
