Job Description
Substance Use Disorder Counselor

Position Summary: This position will provide direct clinical services to the agency’s outpatient population. Such services may include intake and assessments, group, individual and family counseling crisis intervention and referrals.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide clients with basic information regarding Outpatient and Community Services programs and services;
  • Work collaboratively with Clinical Supervisor, Managers, Coordinators and other staff;
  • Data entry, including Accu-Care, Sage, etc.
  • Provide monitored UA testing of clients;
  • Facilitate psycho-educational groups;
  • Maintain case load of active clients;
  • Uploads documents into SAGE and maintains patient charts in accordance with established agency practices and procedures;
  • Prepare documentation in SAGE and file same in accordance with established agency practices and procedures;
  • Assist in determining client funding eligibility;
  • Prepare client Discharge documentation in accordance with established agency practices and procedures;
  • Familiarize self with requirements of various funding sources;
  • Be able to take trauma into account during the process of interacting with clients;
  • Avoid triggering trauma reactions and/or re-traumatizing clients;
  • Adjust own behavior and control own feelings in order to allow clients to learn how to manage trauma symptoms and be able to benefit from program services; referral to therapist as needed
  • Comply with confidentiality CFR 42 and HIPPA requirements;
  • Comply with requirements regarding mandated reporting;
  • Comply with all agency practices, policies and procedures, including but not limited to CARF requirements;
  • Provide timely and professional responses to internal and external communications;
  • Participate in continuing education, as required by Certifying/Licensing bodies and/or agency;
  • Attend and participate in regular, on-going in-service trainings for the benefit of the agency;
  • Participate in staff meetings as required, including the weekly CCC and provide requested information;
  • Train and supervise interns;
  • Attend meetings with applicable governing agencies and funding sources;
  • Interact with County and State agencies, as required;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager of Outpatient & Community Services.

Qualifications:

  • A State Certification in substance abuse counseling and one year of professional experience counseling recovering addicts in a program that has been licensed by the California State

Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs;

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience preferred. Minimum one year paid substance abuse or social services counseling;
  • Excellent communication skills including good verbal and written skills;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion;
  • Ability to work well in a team environment;
  • Superior organizational skills;
  • Strong computer skills, to encompass all Microsoft Office applications;
  • Ability to be sensitive to trauma and gender while interacting with clients;
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred;
  • Valid California Driver’s License and proof of personal auto insurance is required. Hire is contingent upon agency insurability;
  • Must be able to pass a criminal history background screening (DOJ and FBI); as well as maintain a yearly CPR Certification, First Aid Certification, physical exam, and Tuberculosis test results
  • Valid CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain within 7 days of hire
  • Proof of immunization – COVID-19 vaccine

Education:

  • B.A. in counseling, social services or related field and/or recognized certified state of California in substance abuse counseling preferred but not required.

Must be able to pass the following pre-employment screenings:

  • Background check, including criminal history (live scan)
  • Drug and health screen, including negative TB test
  • Employment and education verification
