We are looking for a Unit Secretary for the Mother Baby Unit at St. Mary Medical Center.

Location: Apple Valley, CA

Work Schedule: Part time - 60 Biweekly Hours

Shift: 10-hour, Days

Job Summary:

Primarily responsible for the clerical/receptionist activities on the patient care unit. Works under general supervision and direction of the department director, manager, supervisor or charge nurse and according to established policies and procedures. Transcribes physicians' orders, schedules diagnostic tests and therapies for patients, assembles and maintains patient charts, answers telephone, relays other calls and messages and maintains appropriate supplies and equipment levels.

Essential Functions:

  • Transcribes physicians' orders as appropriate for assigned unit with close review by registered nurse. Notifies nursing personnel of orders requiring immediate attention.
  • Ensures that scheduling of outpatient procedures is completed correctly.
  • Assembles charts for newly admitted residents and maintains current charts by filing physician orders and test results. Maintains confidentiality of patient records.
  • Disassembles and routes patient charts to appropriate departments upon discharge, transfer, or expiration.
  • Greets and directs patients and unit visitors.
  • Answers telephone calls, responds to routine inquiries and relays other calls and messages.
  • Contacts physicians directly or through medical center paging system, as requested by authorized personnel. Provides physicians with routine patient information as needed.
  • Contacts medical center departments in order to change schedules, arrange for patient transportation, unit cleaning or equipment repairs, and to order medications, meals and supplies.
  • Assists nursing personnel as necessary.
  • Performs related clerical duties such as filing, photocopying and running errands as required to maintain department operations.
  • Maintains department supplies at convenient levels and in accordance with budgetary allowances for the nursing station.
  • Complies with medical center life-safety, quality and risk management policies, standards and procedures and in doing so is responsible for identifying, reporting and initiating correction of any potentially harmful conditions and/or behaviors.
  • Responds to residents’ call lights to determine residents’ needs, provide assistance within scope of job, and notifies appropriate personnel of residents' requests.
  • Attends 75% of all staff meetings.

Skills:

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to gather and exchange information with physicians, residents, visitors and medical center staff in a courteous and effective manner.

Minimum Position Requirements:

Education:

  • Coursework/Training - Unit Specific training.
  • Coursework/Training - Environmental orientation within 30 days of hire.

Licenses/Certifications: Current BLS for Healthcare Provider B00010.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Experience:

  • 1 year Clerical experience.
  • Background in medical center/hospital setting.
