20-25 Veterinary Assistants and RVT/ Kennel Assistants/ Doctor’s Assistants

Work Environment

Fast paced, sometimes stressful environment while multi-tasking and collaborating with other staff members. Hazards associated with aggressive patients, infected animals, and controlled substances. Exposure to unpleasant odors & noises. Risk for possible cat or dog bites, scratches and other potential injuries when restraining, examining, moving, or cleaning animals. Exposure to x-rays and anesthetic gases with proper protective measures. Potential for exposure to zoonotic diseases and possible hazardous materials.

  • Knowledge of hospital procedures outlined in the employee manual as well as those that are implied (reasonable expectations).
  • Knowledge of all BCVG Technician SOP’s, as well as knowledge of CSR, DA and Kennel SOP’s.
  • Requires ability in problem-solving involving veterinary expertise will be reserved for the practitioners.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office (Word, Excel), email.
  • Ability to create and write new SOP, as well as update any existing SOP with any new and changing medicine. (All SOP’s must be approved by Hospital Manager and Hospital Owner.
  • Critical thinking / understanding logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Knowledge of Nursing care and procedures used for properly taking take of hospitalized patients.
  • Knowledge and ability to train in proper Triaging, caring for critical patients and CPR of Canines and Felines.
  • Knowledge in ordering medical supplies.
  • Able to work under pressure in stressful situations managing hospital flow while handling multiple tasks such as inventory, ordering and staff schedules, staff conflict, etc.
  • Attentive to details and have excellent organizational skills.
  • Able to effectively communicate to upset and disgruntled clients in an attempt to smooth over an unpleasant visit or situation.
  • Wears BCVG scrubs and jacket, appropriate footwear and matches undershirt to the company’s colors, gray, black, and navy.
  • Solid knowledge of EzyVet and SmartFlow or ability to understand within two weeks of hire
  • Understands what it means to “lead by example” at all times.

Hours

  • Available to work any days, any shifts, including Weekends and Overnights; may be required to work uncommon hours, subject to recall in emergency situations, required to work additional hours beyond a regular work schedule.
  • Regular attendance and timeliness are an essential function in order to fulfill the requirements of this position.

Management Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Be a leader for a technician team with a supervisory demeanor and positive attitude
  • Create employee schedules that align with doctor, team, surgery, appointments, and outpatient needs while monitoring & optimizing overtime and payroll costs. Make arrangements to cover shifts by either seeking coverage by technical team or covering shifts yourself.
  • During slow schedule times, pre-managing staff the day before and coordinating time off, late starts or early go homes. During the day, keeping staff busy with projects.
  • Receive calls from employees regarding tardiness, and illness. Reassign responsibilities of absent employees or call in another employee to cover shift
  • Ensure that technical staff provides our clients and patients with gentle, compassionate, skillful care through efficiency, teamwork, and professionalism; work directly with all doctors to ensure DVMs’ orders are met by the technical team
  • Ability to give and receive constructive criticism.

· Maintain a positive, productive, and friendly work environment for staff- (No gossip, no back congregations, no negative talk, no sexual innuendo speech and no teasing or bullying)

· Ensure a professional atmosphere is maintained at all times (no cell phones, no loud music, no loud voices, no personal chatting when clients present, no gestures or implied attitudes that reflect poorly on the hospital)

· Praise, encourage, motivate, and reassure staff, Resolve employee conflicts quickly and fairly. Problem employees should be disciplined via write ups and discharged after written warnings. Make recommendations to the practice manager concerning personnel matters, disciplinary actions and follow through

· Ensure all technical and nontechnical tasks are completed while staff adheres to proper safety procedures at all times

· Train, supervise, assist, evaluate, motivate, and mentor the technical team in their performance

· Train and integrate new team members; assist in hiring new staff members

· Plan, organize and conduct staff meetings and lunch & learns.

· Assign Technical Team duties – based on strengths and daily hospital needs; Oversee team tasks & ensure they are completed efficiently

· Show unbiased judgment when managing people and make fair and just recommendations in regard to training, discipline and managing personal issues

· Conduct monthly departmental meetings and schedule in-service meetings as deemed appropriate and necessary

  • Oversee the induction and training for all newly joined personnel and monitor their performance.

  • Assist in interviewing and hiring of technical support staff
  • Actively participate in the Leadership Team
  • Supervise the technical team ensuring that they follow hospital policies and procedure and are always courteous and professional in their assistance to clients, doctors, and other hospital team members.
  • Consistently observe technical staff job performance, keeping accurate and thorough records for routine and as-needed evaluations. Attend and participate in all leadership meetings and trainings.
  • Maintain confidentiality for staff, clients, and patients
  • Must be HBOT Certified
  • Train new staff on HBOT and ensure all staff are certified.

Client Interaction Tasks:

  • Assist clients with unruly or unrestrained pets. Ensure that all dogs are leashed, and that cats and smaller pets are caged. Isolate aggressive pets.
  • Handle angry or grieving clients with a calm, compassionate, and reassuring manner.
  • Assist clients/ patients to their cars if needed.
  • Complete assigned tasks in a timely manner and meet all deadlines.
  • Provide original ideas for improving policies, procedures for treatment room, Triage, Kennel, and surgery.
  • Ability to perform proper history taking for Emergency and Neurology.

Ability to go over estimates/ treatment plans and discharges with clients

  • Provide basic education on animal care, nutrition and medical conditions to clients based on the Dr.’s recommendations.
  • Teach clients how to express bladder, administer medicines, injections and /or fluids at home
  • Ensure all clients have a positive experience.

Main Job Responsibilities

Thoroughly know, understand and able to train on all aspects of the technician assistant and RVT positions to other qualified team members. This includes:

1. RVT/ VA/ KA/ and DA schedule.

2. Ensure Staff Schedule is out in a timely manner (1 month in advance)

3. Ability to properly schedule appropriate staff depending on RTO.

4. Ability to manage any call outs or late staff members appropriately.

5. Ensure Hospital Inventory is properly stocked and well back stocked.

6. Ensure Hospital always has Oxygen and Nitrogen.

7. Inventory and Ordering of all Staff BCVG scrubs and jackets

8. Making sure support staff is following all BCVG protocols set in place by hospital manager and Owner.

9. Ensuring that staff are keeping up with tasks and ensuring adequate hospital flow.

10. Updating or adding new SOP’s, following BCVG SOP outline. Hospital Manager and Owner to approve all new SOP’s.

11. Assist and work with DA manager in doctor’s assistant training and writing DA SOP’s.

12. Ability to perform verbal and written warning, give write up, and assist with staff termination.

13. Ability to perform staff phone interviews, in-person interviews and Working interviews.

14. Assist in hiring and onboarding process.

15. Making sure staff is keeping up with disinfecting and organization of Hospital

16. Ensuring staff members are properly utilizing down time.

17. Monitoring Cell phone use.

18. Ability to get essential information, updates, reminder’s, new SOP out to staff members. Utilizing Email and Microsoft Teams.

19. Ability to hold monthly and quarterly staff and one-on-one employee meetings.

20. Ability to hold meetings and effectively communicate with staff Doctors in order to manage a great technical team.

21. Thoroughly and accurately detail all medical records including putting your initial next to all communications and treatments completed.

22. Ability to communicate yourself and teach proper communication to all Doctor’s regarding patient care.

23. Ensure proper physical handling of all patients.

24. Assigning at dove videos and monitoring completion and quizzes.

25. Keep track of staff training, sign-off sheets, quizzes, etc.

26. Keep track of staff quizzes, update and add quizzes as needed.

27. Make sure free CE’s are available to the staff as they come up.

28. Ensure all hospitalized patients are comfortable and ability to perform all treatments per doctor’s instructions.

29. Ensure all surgical patients receive proper pre-op and post operative care per veterinarian’s direction

30. Report any hospitalized patient physical or attitude change to the doctor in charge

31. Ensure all patients are clean, fed, fresh water and well cared for

32. Properly perform and teach how to obtain vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration) of animal

33. Ability to perform and teach proper radiograph positioning per BCVG SOP, including “hands-free” positioning.

34. Properly perform and teach Sterile technique.

35. Properly perform and teach IV catheter placement and monitoring following BCVG SOP.

36. Properly perform and teach Urinary catheter placement and monitoring following BCVG SOP.

37. Perform and teach proper venipuncture collection: jugular, cephalic and saphenous.

38. Must be able to administer treatments/medications/injections/ by way of IV, PO, SQ, IM or transdermal as prescribed by a veterinarian via Smartflow.

39. Properly restrain animals, including fractious pets, for examination and treatment

40. Ability to run and perform blood on all Idexx in-house analyzers; Sedivue urinalysis, Snapshot dx, Snap pro, hematocrit, Blood gas, Coag machine, catalyst One and Procyte machine. Skin and ear cytology’s, manual blood counts, platelet count, Blood typing, Blood crossmatch manual and kit.

41. Properly collect and teach how to submit blood, stool, urine or tissue samples to the appropriate laboratory.

42. Maintain and use medical equipment such as IDEXX machines, Autoclave, EO gas Sterilizer, Radiology Table, CT, MRI machines. Future C-arm, endoscopy tower and equipment, ligature, etc.

43. Adequate knowledge of veterinary medicine in order to triage and teach proper Triage SOP.

44. Initiate and run emergency procedures including feline and canine CPR

45. Calculate, and monitor for emergency surgery and Neurology surgeries.

46. Properly utilize and maintain anesthesia machine and maintenance.

47. Prepare animals for surgery

48. Ability to calculate and teach proper math for drug calculations and CRI calculations.

49. Ability to Monitor Critical care and emergency anesthesia and properly record anesthetic record on Smartflow Tablet.

50. Intubate patients in an emergency and monitor Critical patients in an emergency or post CPR.

51. Assist veterinarian in surgical procedures using proper aseptic technique

52. Properly perform and teach how to Sterilize instruments and equipment

53. If RVT properly induce and monitor for anesthesia

54. If RVT Euthanize patient per Doctor’s orders.

55. Ability to teach and hold quarterly CPR training.

Physical Qualifications:

  • Have the physical strength and ability to stand for an entire shift when needed.
  • Ability to bend, kneel on knees and easily get up from a “on the floor” position
  • Ability to lift pets and objects weighing up to 40 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to assist in lifting patients weighing more than 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to read charts and computer screen
  • Must be able to hear well enough to communicate with clients and other employees
  • Ability to perform manual labor including cleaning of hospital, opening boxes, unpacking inventory, putting inventory away in low cupboards and utilizing stepstool to put away inventory on high shelves.
  • Must be able to work all days and hours that the hospital is open including Weekends and Overnight shifts.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $28.00 - $35.00 per hour
